Immaculate Conception Church
Fairbanks, Alaska
Est. 1904
"The Little White Church besides the river", I was told when asking
for the address to give to the taxi driver.
This is the new location, north of Chena River.
The "little church" was built by
Father Francis Monroe, S.J.,
in 1904.
The church was built because many of the gold prospectors were Catholics
Its first location was situated across the
Chena River from its present
site
and some four hundred feet upstream.
Father Monroe supervised the move of the church.
The river was frozen solid and strong enough to support the move (six feet deep)
PS: the bird is on cue when I took this picture.
The church was on the
Register of Historical Sites, April 3, 1976
The church has unique stained glass windows
